I currently have a kershaw cryo as a regular beater. Assisted opening for easy one hand use, deep pocket clip (reversible for tip up or tip down), and an overtravel stop on the lockbar. Pretty cheap steel, but easy to sharpen and gets the job done. Had it for 5+ years so I think it was worth the $50.
I've had a kershaw leek, spyderco tenacious, SOG flash II all as cheapish every day knives. None of those are a bad choice imo.
Autos aren't legal here so I don't really have any experience there.
Man I used to be so into knives. I actually made several fixed blades years ago... still have the 2x72 belt grinder collecting dust at my parents place haha. I only have a couple nice folders left. Sypderco Southard flipper and an aluminum Lionsteel SR-1. The rest are ESEE fixed blades that I take camping and hiking.

Yeah true. I prefer actual knife, but these utility knife is handy. (going back to pros and cons) Auto is illegal in Canada? Huh didn't know that. In US, it's legal... of course vary with blade length in different states.
