My friend managed to get VW to fix his then decade old Jetta due to rusts on one of the fenders. The district rep showed up, okay the repair, and even got the dealer to replace the rusting trunk lid under their 12 year rust warranty. I'm sure it was all goodwill since there was no perforation on the rust area.

It is a 5 year perforation warranty.
He would be covered under the 36 month if not for the "damaged" exception.
Yes, many will good will these types of repairs but they do not need to as per the wording of the warranty.
Just be glad we don't own pre 2006 Mazdas!
