The 1/2 series should weigh ~3250lbs and the Z4 should weigh right around 3000 for me to be interested.

It doesn't weigh the same. The 2 series is lighter like 3150 in low/base trim, but it can be optioned to be just as heavy as the average 3-series. Unfortunately, there is a minimal amount of stuff a luxury car will always have, so there is only so much weight that can be lost. The 3-series has grown in size and features, but it is still considered a compact. It probably wasn't easy for BMW to make a 2-series (a subcompact) that is luxurious and capable of holding a straight six, but still be significantly lighter that the 3-series.
This is the same problem with the Z4. Even though the platform is unique and small, there is still the constraints of adding a 40i engine, convertible top with chassis stiffness, BMW luxuries on top of modern electronics and safety equipment. Guaranteed if the twins had the same features it wouldn't be light.
