Here is the WRX's drivetrain. They use a flat opposed 4 like a v4, but to have AWD, they made the transmission inline with the front axle, so the engine sticks forward like below.

NOW, the same as before, im speaking to the potential of moving from the v8 to the inline six in a corvette. im still saying that an inline six provides packaging issues that pose a bigger issue for handling than a v6 or v8. i definitely agree that its a theory over practice issue. the thing is, when you are building a car from the ground up, why start with a theoretical hinderance? thats all...
