Sounds like a fanstastic trip!
The media likes to blow everything out of proportions to sell advertisement. It's probably be more dangerous to drive through Queens than the Middleast.
Lift kit and off road tires and I wouldn't worry too much about driving pretty much anywhere.
Please do make a thread or a blog about the trip somewhere. Better yet set up a youtube account and post regular videos.
