Better grab hold of your ankles if you are going to ask the dealer for the trade in value without seeing what others will give you. Your best bet is to go to carmax (if you have one by you), get a quote (it's good for a week) on what they'll buy it from you. Then go to the dealer and see what they will negotiate for the car price first, tell them you might be trading in the car. Keep in mind that they will know all the issues with the car and see where you come out ahead.
