-would be used for only one or two drives per week
-maintenance expenses that aren't excessive
-manual transmission
-max purchase price of $8k
-no American cars

Something that's fun for the occasional drive, wouldn't be a daily driver unless necessary, doesn't need to have the lowest miles or the best of everything.

That's actually a pretty tall order for $8k. He either needs to bump that up to around $10k or lower expectations (ie power, quality build or no American cars)

Example: the Miata probably ticks all the boxes except for "decent power" or a relatively clean C5 Corvette would be a good candidate except for the "no American cars" stipulation.

Knowing that he's got a Golf R, is he looking for a different "experience"? so nothing AWD/FWD or in a hatchback form?

Is he interested in bikes at all? For that budget, you can really get a great bike as a second "fun" vehicle.

Off the top of my head: BMW E36, MR2 Spyder, Boxster, 944, Saab 900 turbo
