Yea turbos themselves are well over a 100 years old. They go back to aircraft engines for high altitudes. In fact, it was a GM engineer (Sandford Moss) who pioneered it, testing them on Pike's Peak back in the early 1900s. They were used in aircraft engines as early as 1920 I believe.

Not 100% sure about cars, but I think it was the Oldsmobile Jetfire in the early 60s that was the first production car with a turbo.
