IMO it doesn't matter _unless_ you figure someday you'll get to drive other manual transmission cars that don't have a hill start assist.

I'd recommend trying both ways so at least you know how to use the e-brake without assist.

Personally I use the hill start assist and haven't had any problems. Yesterday I was on a steep ass hill behind a car that decided to partially crest it to the stop sign, and then not go at all despite it being his turn, so I was stopped on what was probably a 60+ degree hill. Worked fine.
