It is like improving the details of something that was already good and not trying to change it entirely. Some don't care about the latter and they'll swap the engine or install a turbo to get 300+ hp or strip the interior or whatever, but then you have something entirely different from what you had in first place.
That is just it. There is no definition of "ruined". What one will say is the worst thing ever somebody else will think is the best. If we are talking keeping it as intended from the factory then even changing the tires could be classified as "ruining" it. The people that have done major modifications do not think they ruined anything. Well... most don't at any rate.
