It's definitely overhyped. There's a mystique around it. I think that you get a lot of people talking about it who only have stories of the glory days or drift legends. At the time, it was probably great. When I tracked mine around 2007, it was a $3200 track car. The 4age was a more fun engine than the fa20 and both these cars are willing to swap ends when things get hairy with the Corolla being less forgiving. Yeah the interior light came on during hard cornering and the solid rear axle made for a rough ride but I have very fond memories of that car. It sucked but I loved it. I can see myself saying that last sentence about the brz in a decade although for different reasons.
Basically, overrated but still good and the lineage is definitely there.
