No doubt it was a great little car in the era but much of it's fame in North America now is directly related to the show which makes it seem like a super car. It may come as a shock to the younger guys but virtually nobody in the 80s watched any Japanese racing much less anime. First off, before the widespread availability of satellite no stations carried them and nobody really cared. Secondly the Japanese cars were still getting a foothold in North America and any performance versions were pretty rare. I can not speak to the popularity of it elsewhere back in the 80s.

EDIT: Before I get hate mail I want to be perfectly clear that I am in no way belittling, insulting, ragging on, or in any other way attempting to condemn people's interest in the car nor anime. I was simply saying how it was.
