One of the car mags took an earlier edition of the twins and did an experiment. First, they upgraded the tires, I think to Pilot Super Sports. Factory width, factory wheels. Ran laps.
Then they upped the tire size. I don't recall with certainty what size, but something in the 235/245 range. Ran more laps. The stock size PSSs were significantly faster than the factory Primacies. The larger tires were significantly slower than the 215/45 17 PSSes. Not as slow as the Primacies, but significantly slower than the 215/45 MPSSs. IIRC they were slower in all parts of the operational window - on acceleration and on the road course. They MAY have had a slight edge on braking, but it's been a while and, well, it's been a while.
It seems to me you did the right thing asking for advice. You just got the order of operations reversed. Next time, ask for help BEFORE you make a move. I remember Humfrz telling a story about a Viking warlord he knew back in the day. The raiding parties were not returning with the goods as well as they used to. So, the warlord takes the guys aside and gives a stern lecture.
"Look guys - this raiding party stuff isn't too complicated, but the order of operations is VERY important. First, you pillage. THEN, you plunder. And THEN AND ONLY THEN - burn."
I get that right Hum?
