Reminds me of a back-in-the-day story .....OK, what doesn't .....
It was a hot August day, back on the farm, and the crops had been laid by ......so, I had some free time to work on my built car.
I had cleaned and gapped the spark plug, so I pulled er out on the paved road in front of the farm, to see how it ran.
I had just got it wound up in high gear, when the steering wheel just spun around and the wheels stayed straight.
Understand that the steering on my machine consisted of a steering wheel attached to piece of water pipe, that two lengths of 2x4 were attached to. An old (apparently rotten) piece of clothesline was wound around the box on the steer mechanism, and led through a couple of pulleys down to the front axle, which would turn when I turned the wheel (most of the time).
Here I am, going full speed (maybe 30 MPH) going down a straight road when, you guessed it, a car came from the other direction .......
The steering rope apparently broke and I was out of control. What to do ..... I hit the brake ...... right? ....... wrong move! The hand brake only worked on the left rear wheel ...... which, when applied, pulled my machine off to the left ....... in the path of the oncoming car .......
Well, the other car slowed down and I zoomed off of the road into the ditch in front of it. The fellow stopped and ask me if I was OK.
I was so embarrassed when I had to push my "car" back down the road into the barnyard .......
THE END
