There was one other guy who posted the exact same thing on the board, but he had a race build with a modified engine. I'm too lazy to look it up. Mine's stock, and I was just accelerating away from a red light when it went. I think it was just a freak failure.
On the other hand, we can't be
sure it hasn't happened to anyone else, because other people
have reported spun bearings on this board. I didn't take the thing apart myself and wouldn't have snapped the pic if they hadn't shown me the oil pump gear. The mechanic at the dealership could have easily just diagnosed it as spun bearings vaguely due to oil starvation and never told me about the oil pump at all. Therefore, I can't help but wonder how many of the other spun bearings posted here were actually caused by shattered oil pumps, and we just never heard about it.
Even so, grenading engines still seems to be a relatively rare occurrence, regardless of the cause. I still have plenty of confidence in the car and the replacement motor, and I'd still buy one of these again if I had it to do over.
