To change your avatar goto Quick Links->Edit Options->Edit Avatar.

To resize or trim a picture you can do that easily in MS Paint. Once you trim it, select "Resize" change to pixels and then change it to whatever is needed. Other photo editing software would have similar features. There may be a website somewhere you can do it in but I don't normally go that route.
