It is fine to say "I wrote it down" but if it ever came to a dispute you will be in a better position if you can say "I wrote it down and here is what I used and when I bought it". There are several accounts of denied warranty work on here where the person can not prove they did what they claimed. The dealers/manufacturers are just trying to protect themselves from people that don't do what they are supposed to and then try to make claims. It helps keep them in business.
