Have you tried taking a bit of oil and running it along the bottom of the sandwich plate, sort of like what you would do with an oil filter to create a good seal.

Another way I've seen this issue resolved is torquing things down to the correct specs.

If either of those don't work the bottom of the sandwich plate may not be completely flat, causing the accumulation of oil at the bottom. If that's the case, some machining will be needed.
