The way I look at it is that if I need to use premium gas then I want the car to use as little as possible. Not sure that I would ever be worried about a $5.00 difference in a fill up though. At once a week that is a whopping $260 difference over the course of a year. I piss away more than that in coffee. If that difference is a make or break consideration then you need to look closely at your finances.

Cars that need premium gas make power through compression. Compression causes knock. Knock destroys engines. The only way to combat knock is the use a higher octane gas. To make the same power on regular gas then they need to change much of the car.
Lol, no I can easily afford it but remember my other vehicle is a Jeep, worse than trucks or as bad on gas. So, the mpg while fun factor and reliability are a value for me. Mazda says it’s okay to use regular gas on Miata but better torque with premium.
