Shiv is the owner and tuner for the OFT. A bin is the tune file. The slt is the file that oft uses as a definition to know what addresses to use for what tables in the tune file. A flex fuel kit gives an input to the ECU to let it know what percentage of ethanol the car is currently ingesting. With a flex fuel tune, it will automatically adjust the tune to accommodate whatever percentage of ethanol the fuel has.

What this does is allows you to fill up with either 91 or higher or E85 at any time no matter how much fuel you have in the car.

The flex fuel tune from Shiv is due to the open source work that Ztan did. In fact all of the non-Ecutek tunes for flex fuel are thanks to that work and the work of Wayno and Shiv converting Ztan's A01G bin over to other bin types.

Prior to the flex fuel work that Ztan did, Shiv had already developed E85 specific tunes that were really downtuned a bit to allow for differences in pump E85 ethanol content. In order to use E85 without the flex fuel kit and tune, you need to basically run all of the fuel down to almost empty, then fill up with E85 and then flash the tune for E85 once the long term fuel trims (LTFT) shows that it's having to add a substantial amount of fuel to maintain proper fueling. This lets you know that the fuel actually going into the engine is of high enough ethanol content to allow for the advanced timing and additional power that the e85 tune gives.

If you need to switch back to 91 or 93 fuel, then you need to run the car back down and put those fuels back in and flash it back to standard.

If you run an E85 tune on standard pump gas you risk seriously damaging your engine. This is one reason why flex fuel is much better. You can pretty much flash and forget. Put 91 when you want and put E85 when you want.

It's still beneficial to have a flex fuel kit so long as it has a readout telling you the ethanol content, this is MUCH easier to monitor and know when it's ok to flash to an E85 tune than monitoring ltft.

This is especially true if you're using tactrix to flash rather than OFT. The only method of actively monitoring ltft with Tactrix is either using EcuEdit or Installing a cracked version of toyota's techstream software, which is findable with a search on this site.

That is the good thing about using tactrix, you can do some extra things with techstream that you can't with other tuning options(at least that I'm aware of) For instance, I have disabled my DRLs (daytime running lights) and the seatbelt not connected beeping.

Based on your level of knowledge I would strongly suggest you go with OFT or Ecutek. You can easily brick your ECU if you don't know exactly what you're doing with the tactrix.

Wayno does some custom tunes for the OFT if you go with OFT. He'll provide you with everything you need once you have the flex fuel kit installed. Just make sure that the input from the flex fuel kit goes to the evap sensor input like steve99 says below...
