Agreed that it is unnecessary and your mileage will suck big time. Disagree that you are creating any level of "extra wear". The ideal cruising revs for these cars is in the 3,000 to 3,500 range. You still have the power to accelerate quickly, there is no risk of lugging and it is right in the range to get the best mileage.
