That is great if you just get to cruise and don't have to accelerate quickly. I know that many think they have superhuman reflexes and "will just downshift" if they need to speed up suddenly but in an emergency situation they may not have the 1/2 second that could take. Cruising at anything below about 2,000 will indeed make the car sluggish if you try to accelerate.
