I had a nightmare experience back in the day with a block thread failing after motor was reassembled... Definitely Head Studs >>>> Head bolts.
That was crazy back in the day, had to send the block to a machine shop to re-thread, bought bolts and sent to other machine shop who actually cut the bolt head and threaded it, making it a stud.
At this point, the problem was the nut was too big to allow the socket in the hole to tighten it (it was 17mm thread, needed a 14 mm nut)... So that machine shop actually by hand (meaning it wasn't a CNC machine, it was a manual machine) modified the 17mm nuts to be a 14mm nut.... That ultimately worked.
