To me, the spring removal didn't really make the engagement point more defined, it made the pedal feel more linear. With the spring in, the clutch felt lighter on the lower half of the travel as the spring pivots and pushes down. With it out, the travel feels the same weight through the entire range, making it much easier to modulate.
