Anyway, if you want to paint the wheel, you can tape it off and paint it with the tire on it. If you want to powder coat; you will have to remove the tire. They will have to put the wheel in an oven to "cure" the powder.
I know it's possible to re-clear coat the wheel. But clearing over the messed up clear coat won't fix it. You would have to strip the old off first. You can polish off the bad clear. I've done this, it is time consuming. Maybe someone else can chime in with some tips on how to make stripping and re-clearing easier.
If they were mine and I wanted to change them... I would paint them dark silver or bronze. Tape off the lips, scuff the centers, prime, paint, and then clear them. The primer and paint will fill in the light scratches.
Good luck!

This wheel originally came off a forester. (This pic is when i originally got the wheels) which is why the tire is so big. Since then i put 255/35r18 on them.
But i want to separate the wheel and the lip because i want to use paint stripper to remove the old clear coat. I want the paint them as im not a huge fan of the polished aluminum/chrome look. Im leaning towards a bronze lip/barell and a black face.
I just want to know if i can take off the lip with the tire on or if that lip is whats holding the tire bead in. What confused me is when they said its a one piece with a separate lip. Made me think the lip is not where the bead sits. If that makes sense?
