I've experienced this with my previous car. Went through 3 alternators, each dying immediately after I drained the battery. It's not yet confirmed because I haven't killed this one and no one else on the forum has followed up with their story.
The power steering only runs when the alternator is charging properly. I'll
guess that your alternator killed itself trying to charge the drained battery but without hands-on, that's all it is, a guess.
