THE Subaru WRX is being recalled in Australia because the subwoofer speaker fitted in the boot might spark a fire.
While loud sound systems are a common accessory fitted by WRX owners, the recall affects subwoofers installed by Subaru.
The recall of more than 4000 WRX sedans (2015 models) was triggered after one car caught fire in Tasmania.
The
recalls.gov.au website says there is a “risk of fire if the subwoofer speaker overheats”.
A statement from Subaru says: “the recall is due to the possibility of an electrical short circuit that may cause the subwoofer speaker to overheat and risk a fire”.
A wire to the subwoofer, which is located in the boot, may be moved out of its normal position and touch the metal frame of the subwoofer, “resulting in an intermittent short that could create a continuous electrical current, overheating the subwoofer,” says Subaru.
Owners of affected vehicles will be contacted by Subaru Australia, advising them of the recall — or they can call 1300 550 994 to check if their car is on the list.
Subaru says it will fit a “spacer clip” to prevent the wire moving from its normal position.
