"auto" 4wd units I think work that way if they don't have a electronic diff...wheel is spinning...locks brake on that wheel...to divert the power to the wheel that is "stuck" in the mud.

Pretty much. So the system must recognize that it isn't seeing a change in the throttle position and uses the ABS to slow the wheel speed down to control traction. Surprised that it works as well as it does. Unfortunately it would seem I will be replacing my brake components sooner if I don't get some more traction.
