A bit late to the party, as I just joined, but anyway;
Have a look for either Adam LZ or Chrisfix on youtube for a video on headlight polishing as a guide.
You can start with 1200 grit (if you need to go more aggressive it might be too far gone) - use wet and dry sandpaper with a soft sanding block and add some fairy liquid to the water you use to wet it. Then go up to 1500, and then 2000 should be enough.
Either use Plastex (or similar plastic polish - with a random orbital if you have one) to go back to OEM, or re-apply the red coat.
Ive had really back headlights in the past that come back no worries with a bit of care and elbow grease.
