My point is, yes, the chassis is superbly engineered. The roof is an integral part of that design but it is covered with a paper thin veneer of steel for moar lightness.

but you are right though, there have been reports of roof bending because of the tension. They only noticed it on racks that have been mounted on an extended period of time ( i would guess months?)

im guessing they discontinued because of the damage reports. if there was an alternative where it wouldnt cause "damage" im totally up for it but right now I only see seasuckers as a possible substitute, reviews on it are great but im prolly still going to be nervous knowing that my gear is only mounted through suction cups. LOL
