That's the issue. The correct way to do the job is with the engine out of the car so you have greater leverage and ability to assemble the parts without causing disruption to the sealant bead.

Learned that stuff the hard way working on MR2 Turbos. Took more time to do the same job with an engine in the car than outside of it and often not as well done either.
