Is it mostly freeway miles at the speed limit? Higher speeds will wear the tire out quicker due to more heat. My commute isn't fast so the 'painfully slow' part may actually be true (although it's not my intention to drive slow) as plodding along in traffic at <40 mph is definitely going to be less wear than >65 mph over the same distance.
I'll have to take a look at mine tomorrow, ~8k miles and 2x autocross events after almost a year of driving, plenty of tread left.

Where I live everything is very close by so I never really get the tires heated up much.
90% of that was 5 to 10 minute drives at around 55 mph or less. Here and there at 60-70 mph, maybe a couple hundred miles of the total.
No real long distance to speak of. Exactly two trips about 100 miles each at 75-85 mph. I don't use the car for vacation travel.
Just a bunch of short normal driving and that's why I don't understand how I went through them in less than half their life expectancy.
