Was just throwing it out there since the issue is shown with the car turned off. Some cars can be very particular about when they will shift.

Well, no, mine has a bit more than 1,000 miles. But, if I recall proper, the shifter always did return to center by itself, if not in gear.

The OP isn't talking about "shifting" (as in putting it in or out of gear) it ......but the shift lever just returning to "center" when it's out of gear.

Yep, I've shifted an M151 when it hasn't been running ...... my driver would let me play like I was driving my (his) jeep ....... as long as it wasn't running. So, there!
