Wow - a lot of complaining in this thread!
Anyway, this is up to the dealer. Do not - for even a second - think the dealer will not blame the manufacturer for something that makes a customer, or potential customer, unhappy. It happens, and that is why you need to find a good dealer to take your car to.
No car company will cover everything you might imagine should be covered - none. Spending "a few thousand" to make a customer happy sounds good to the customer, but consider how much money the dealer and manufacturer make on that car when sold. And then consider how many cars a dealer and manufacturer get in for warranty work! Yes, all the customers are contributing to provide the money to cover warranty work - all. Car companies are not charitable, they want to make a profit by maximizing sales volume and minimizing expenses.
I agree that you should provide only the basic problem for the dealer to diagnose and not go into detail about what happened or might have happened.
I buy Toyotas for reliability, i.e., they last a long time without needing much repair. If you get a lemon, try to get the manufacturer to replace it with an equal value car early - if you bought it new.
I am looking to get a twin to track - but I am particularly looking for ones with high mileage so I can beat on it comfortably!!
