From what I've realized at least with my hometown is that even if your state has its own free market economy and monetary system, one vital element is to have your own ready for battle standing army to even remotely attempt succession from the motherland. I have no idea why most of my people don't even realize this simple missing link. The argument is that the one rebel state already has all the key ingredients and still haven't been able to lol!
