The LEGO Torsen style diff's you guys had in school were made using existing LEGO components. LEGO hasn't released a Torsen diff officially as a product, or as a part of a product, though there are some fairly simple slick ways to build them.
There is a LEGO Diff housing that you can start with that, in sets, is built as an open diff.
