I was 27 when I got my FRS.....got it after I got engaged and bought a new house. Heard all the same things - not practical, what about kids, doesn't look professional. My now wife was the only one who supported me when I decided to get the FRS.
Flash forward a year and a half - I have a kid on the way. I gave up my FRS for a Focus RS so I could fit all my baby gear, but still have fun while driving. Funny enough, I still hear the same comments - hatchbacks aren't practical, you need a van/SUV, blah blah blah.
Forget what everyone else says - YOU are the one driving the car so go for what you want.
