Long story short: My dad was tech advisor for the first 2 movies and gathered the cars for the Tokyo Drift. He was the owner of the orange supra & blue maxima in the first movie, along with the silver skyline in the second.
He was approached at a car show by some people who handed him a script for a movie (was then called "Redline") He went through it, and then they started making changes here and there and started production. The 3000GT was ditched because there were better tuner cars on the market, cars that people considered to be more prestigious than others, and because certain scenes would not work with the 3000GT. The scene where Paul Walker jumps out of the Supra onto the Semi truck required a vehicle with a targa top- something that the 3000GT didn't offer.
My Dad had a Supra at the time, took Rob Cohen for a ride in it and, after consideration, they ultimately decided they were going to use that vehicle for the movie. An RB-swapped 240sx was never in contention to be the hero car lol
There was a similar scenario with 2F2F. The hero car was supposed to be a couple of compact Dodge tuner cars (take a guess) but they turned down the proposal from Dodge and intercepted a couple Evo VIIs on their way to a rally time somewhere in Europe.
