The synchro works as the brake for the gear to synchronize the shaft speed and reduce shift grind during gear engagement. The carbon fiber lining engages the gear more precisely by stopping the gear rotation faster than a stock brass synchro.
There is a very good article by Hoerbiger that shows direct comparison of performance of carbon synchros and manufacturing processes side by side. (link below) I think the biggest difference you will see is that carbon is less sensitive to fluid choice and performs much better at high RPM shifting. Under normal to extreme driving the carbon will outperform brass or sintered every time.
