and that is just a sample size of one. Other set ups eliminate it more (or less I guess).

Depends the gear and unfortunately there is no norm. Some might use 3rd gear, others 4th gear, others 5th gear. It is also an easy way to show gains from nothing (before & after). The 3rd gear will always show lower output than the higher gears.
