And yeah, I was under the impression that crickets only happened when the car was up to operating temperature and at idle, people saying they've having them in 2nd or 3rd gear makes me wonder if they're hearing the DI ticking and thinking its crickets?

That is my suspicion. The change over can be dramatic under the right conditions.
