1. Dont try to go into first gear at 10-15MPH, thats bad and the transmission is purposely locking you out of first.
2. You don't need to downshift from 2nd to 1st if you're just coasting to a stop.
3. If you're really concerned about bogging the engine while coming to a stop (like a red light), just shift to neutral.
4. You dont haaave to be at a complete standstill to drop to 1st gear for situations like going up a hill, but try to only do it when <5MPH. Above 5MPH 2nd gear should still be fine going up a hill anyway.
