Honestly, if your car lives outside, unless you are claying (and thus re-waxing/sealing) after every wash, you are probably rubbing the remaining contaminates that are sitting on the surface directly into the surface of the paint when you are drying.
It's crazy how much stuff a wash doesn't pick up off the paint.

That's why I QD while drying. To help glide the towel over the paint as it dries. It's not needed, but I find solace in doing it.
