It could but it would take many more years of cycles for it to fail in that particular way.
Of more immediate concern is breakdown of the lubricant between the TOB and the transmisson front cover. The TOB starts to bind on the guide making it possible to destroy the fork simply by stepping on the clutch. Be very careful if you feel the slightest bit of tightness anywhere in the throw of the pedal. I took mine apart and cleaned it for that very reason. I'll drop my transmission to inspect it again this summer but I don't know what the long term answer is.
