They designed things to work properly without a tune, and didn't rest until they had a product that did. It's that simple. The air straightener, the positioning of all the pieces, and a series of small efficiency gains that add up to seem to work together to improve power output. By the "design is pretty much like" approach, you could have saved a bundle and purchased a Honda Fit - because it's pretty much like the twins - four tires, some doors, lights, windshield, engine, etc... And there are people that feel that way about cars.

The injen typically dynos pooorly - as in lower power. I'm not sure if tuning for it corrects that, I suspect it could, but it's also possible that the specifics of the design are never able to get proper MAF readings (too much turbulence or something) resulting in inconsistent behavior and overall power loss.

Most people are still best served with a drop in filter and a new elbow to ditch the sound generator tubing.
