Well, now that you mention it, back-in-the-day, when many of us kids had floor board shift cars and girls wore dresses, the front seats were bench type and not all that wide.

Also, the cars were drafty and the heater was on the inside of the firewall and the heat came out of the center. So, if your date wanted to be comfy, she would sit in the center close to you (no, we didn't have seat belts).

Since the driver had to shift, so we told the girls, that we couldn't keep our hand on the shift lever because it would wear out the transmission. They couldn't expect us guys to just hold our arm up in the air between shifts so, our arm and hand had to rest somewhere, to be ready to shift quickly....... .....get the picture.

Second to third was always the most fun shift ......
