Typically as your pads wear, the fluid level drops along with it (as long as someone hasn't been refilling your reservoir along the way), so when your pads get low, your fluid level would reach a point where it turns on your "BRAKE" light on the dash.

I'm wondering if it's a bad sensor or broken wire causing an intermittent signal, as Tcoat mentioned. What was replaced as a part of the accident repairs?
