OP, I would try using some super glue to try and stop the unraveling and then trip the wispy parts off.

I doubt that you can completely stop it but you might slow it down. I imagine a new wheel will be in your future. With all of the wrecks out there you should be able to pick up a wheel missing the airbag pretty cheap.

There are re-wrap kits and rewrap services out there. Looks decently expensive though. $130 for just the wrap and thread from here http://www.redlinegoods.com/BRZshiftboot.php . More than double that for installation and shipping. I'm guessing you could pick up a nice wheel second hand for cheaper.
