Seems like there should be a grommet/nut ala bicycle brakes to tighten the cable, but there isn't.

Is it the fault of the spring, or the cable? I presume it's the cable being stretched. This is immensely annoying since I just came from a 2000 Celica that had the same exact problem and now my BRZ needs two people to open the hood!

Ahrghh.
Fer cryen out loud, folks, it's a mechanical hood latch ...... they have been around for years! It's not some new fangled ECU controlled piece of rocket science!

Sorry ...... I must have forgot one of ma meds this morning ......

chipmcdonald, what I would do if I were you, would be to first look at the hood latch piece that hangs down from the hood. Is it straight..?? If not, tap it with a hammer till it is. Are the two bolts that hold it in place tight .. ?? If not, tighten them. Now, take a smidgeon of heavy waxy type stuff (like door ease) and place it on the bottom of the metal hoop (where the latch hits it).

Now, I suggest that you make sure the 3 bolts an the latch mechanism are tight. Squirt some WD-40 or silicone spray on the moving parts of the latch mechanism.

Pull the cable a few times with the hood open.

Now, does it work better .... ??

Come back ........
