It was also in a higher price bracket than you remember, it competed with the Boxster and BMW Z3, well over $40k inflation adjusted from when it was introduced.
And I was thinking about it, what existed 15 years ago that would have been on par with the 86? Nothing RWD comes to mind... Yes, 20-25 years ago there was the 240SX, 30-35 years ago we had the SA/FB/FC RX-7, 40-45 you had the Datsun 240-280Z, but when it comes to lightweight, practical, affordable, and sporty, there ain't too many options.
But that's not your forte anyway. Kudos for being able to truly go barebones.
